With graduation just around the corner and the big bad world fast approaching, I knew that gaining as much valuable work experience as possible was paramount for a career in PR. When I was offered work experience at The PR Office, I was determined to make the most of the experience, to acquire as many relevant skills as I could and get a real feel for the PR industry.
My two weeks with The PR Office flew by as everyday was full of different and exciting activities relevant to a number of different sectors. From writing blog posts, drafting press releases, compiling media lists and research for clients and new business, every day was busy and hands-on. Although working closely with me, my work mentor allowed me to juggle my own responsibilities, which has helped to improve my organisational skills. I also learned valuable new skills, essential to working in PR such as how to use media databases and how to properly read and evaluate news stories for the benefit of clients.
Various members of the team took the time out of their busy schedules to sit down with me, introduce themselves and chat to me about their position at the agency and what major projects they were working on. This gave me insight into the variety and depth of projects that PR executives have the opportunity to work on at different stages of their career. I also had the opportunity to join the agency’s internal meetings and catch ups where everyone gave updates on the projects they were working on, as well as achievements. Individuals were always recognised for their hard work, which made for a great working environment – one never without a strong sense of comradery.
If you are looking for a career in PR I would definitely recommend seeking experience. Not only will you acquire the relevant skills but also valuable insight into lots of different industries.
I would like to thank the team for being encouraging, warm and welcoming and making this experience truly rewarding.
